Iceberg Model Template

This is a simple but powerful framework to solve complex problems. It helps identify the underlying issues contributing to the situation. This makes it possible to address the key causes of the issues being experienced.

Events – What has happened? How have people reacted?

Patterns and Trends – Has this happened before? What patterns have there been over time?

Underlying Structures – What is influencing those patterns? What policies, rules of engagement, organisational structure or governance models are contributing to this?

Mental Models – What beliefs, assumptions and values do people hold about this system? What beliefs keep the system in place?

Think of an issue or event that’s impacting you at work and what might be lurking beneath. The iceberg model can help you contextualise an issue through an objective lens.
